Help for parents

Here you can find out step by step how to enter your child's route to school, and find answers to common questions.

Are you a school? Go to the help for schools (German)

Before you start

You need the school's letter and a phone, tablet or computer with internet access. Filling in the questionnaire takes about 10 minutes.

Each letter belongs to one child. If you have several children at the school, you get a separate letter for each child and fill in the questionnaire for each child separately.

Taking part is voluntary. We do not ask for names or addresses.

Opening the questionnaire

  1. Open your phone's camera and point it at the QR code in the letter.

  2. Tap the link that appears. The questionnaire opens.

  3. Without a QR code: open the address given in the letter under “Ohne QR-Code” and enter the access code. Upper or lower case does not matter.

Step 1Your school

You see the name of the school and a check code. Compare it with the check code on your letter. If both match, your answers will reach only this school, safely.

Read the privacy information and confirm that you agree. If there is already an entry for your code, this page tells you so. You can replace it or delete it.

Step 2Transport

Choose how your child gets to school on most days: on foot, by bicycle, by scooter, by bus, driven by car, or mixed.

Choose “mixed” if there is no usual way. You then draw the route your child most often walks.

Steps 3 and 4Starting point and route to school

Here you draw the route to school. First choose where the route starts, for example at home or at a meeting point.

  1. Move the map until the cross is on the street by your home and tap “Place a point here”. Or tap the street directly. The street is enough, not the house.

  2. Zebrio calculates the shortest route to the school along streets and paths and shows it in blue.

  3. Does your child go a different way? Set more points on the right route. The route then takes the shortest way through all the points, in whatever order you placed them.

  4. The route is also shown as a list of streets next to the map, on a phone under “Your route”. Check that it is right.

Driven by car: reasons and walking route

If you usually take your child by car, we ask why. This is optional, and you can choose several reasons.

Then the next part of the step asks which route your child would walk. This is optional (“Skip”). It shows the school which spots keep children from walking.

Dangerous spots

You can add up to 30 spots, or none if the route is safe. To move a marker, drag it on the map, or without dragging: open the spot, tap “Change place”, and move the map under the cross or choose a place from the list.

  1. Move the map until the cross is on the dangerous spot and tap “Report a dangerous spot here”. Or tap the spot directly.

  2. Choose what is dangerous there, for example “Cars drive too fast” or “No pavement”.

  3. If you like, say when it is especially dangerous, describe the spot and write an idea for improvement.

  4. Tap “Done”. Your spots are listed below the map; a yellow one still needs a type.

Good spots

In the same way you add spots that are good and safe, for example a zebra crossing, traffic lights or a school crossing patrol. This is optional and helps the school see what already works well.

Summary and sending

  1. Check all your answers. “Change” takes you back to the right step.

  2. Tap “Send encrypted”. Your answers are encrypted on your device and sent to the school.

  3. You see “Thank you!”. Keep the letter safe. You can also take a photo of the QR code on that page; keep it to yourself.

Changing or deleting your entry

If the route to school changes, for example after moving house, simply scan the QR code again and fill in the questionnaire again. Your previous entry is then replaced.

Deleting: open the questionnaire with your code. Step 1 shows “Delete entry”. The entry is then gone immediately.

Privacy in brief

Your answers are encrypted on your device. Only the school can read them with its key, not even the website's operator. The municipality only receives summarised figures, no individual routes.

Your entry is deleted automatically when your child finishes primary school. The date is in the letter. You can find more in the privacy information.

Frequently asked questions

The QR code will not scan. What can I do?

Hold the phone steady, about 20 cm above the letter, and make sure there is good light. Some phones need the camera app or a scanning app for this.

It also works without the QR code: open the address from the letter (under “Ohne QR-Code”) and enter the code by hand.

It says “This code does not exist”.

Compare each character with the letter. If the code is right, it may have expired or been cancelled by the school. Please ask the school.

I have lost the letter.

Ask the school for a new letter. With the new code you can send a new entry. You can no longer change an old entry without the old code; it is deleted automatically on the date given.

I have several children at the school.

Each child has their own letter with their own code. Fill in the questionnaire for each child separately, even if the route is the same. That way the school counts every child.

The route does not go where my child walks.

Tap another point on the right route on the map, for example on a footpath or a shortcut. The route then goes through this point. “Undo” removes a wrong point.

If a path is missing from the map entirely, draw the nearest route and describe it at a dangerous or good spot.

It says “too far from a street”.

Tap closer to a street or path, at most about 50 metres away. Private driveways are not on the map, so choose the public street in front of your house.

I cannot use the map.

You can also enter the route without the map: tap “Enter the route without the map” and choose the streets one after another from a list. You choose dangerous and good spots in the same way from a list of streets and junctions.

My child goes by bus. Do I need to draw a route?

If your child gets off at the school bus stop, no: the school knows the way from there. If your child gets off at a different stop, draw the walking route from there to the school.

Can I take a break and continue later?

Yes, as long as the page stays open. But nothing is saved until you send it. If you close the page, you have to start again.

Who can see my answers?

Only the school. Your answers are encrypted on your device before they are sent. The website's operator and the hosting provider only see encrypted data. The municipality only receives summarised figures.

The check code does not match my letter.

Then please do not send the questionnaire, and let the school know.

It says “Too many attempts”.

To prevent misuse, only a few attempts in a row are possible. Wait a few minutes and then try again. Your answers are kept as long as the page is open.

More questions

Your child's school answers questions about the survey. Its contact details are in the letter and in step 1 of the questionnaire.
