Running a school route survey: a guide

A survey with Zebrio is little work for the school, spread over a few weeks. Here you find a timetable that suits primary schools and texts you can use straight away: for the newsletter, the parents' evening, the reminder and the report to the municipality.

The survey in four weeks

  1. Before: inform the teachers and the parents' council, set up the survey in about 10 minutes and keep the key sheet in a safe place.

  2. Week 1: announce the survey in the newsletter and hand out the parent letters through the classes. Every child gets their own letter.

  3. Weeks 2 and 3: follow the responses in the analysis and send a reminder, ideally through the class teachers too.

  4. Week 4: look at the results, approve the parents' comments and give the report to the municipality and the parents' council.

The right time

The weeks after the autumn half-term work well. The first-year children know their way by then, and it gets dark in the mornings, so parents notice confusing spots all the more. Avoid the weeks just before holidays and reports. Plan about four weeks: many parents answer in the first days after the letter, and a reminder brings in the rest.

  • After the autumn half-term: the route is familiar, the days get shorter.

  • About four weeks with one reminder

  • Not just before holidays or reports

How more parents answer

  • Through the classes

Class teachers mention the survey in lessons and at parents' evening. Children like to remind their parents.

  • With the parents' council

The parents' council helps announce the survey and answers other parents' questions.

  • Short and simple

Mention that it takes about 10 minutes and needs no account and no name.

  • Offer help

A time slot at school where parents can take part on a tablet helps families without a smartphone.

  • Also in English

The questionnaire is also available in English, and the parent letter says so.

  • Show the results

Tell parents what came of the survey. People who see that something happens are more likely to join in next time.

Step by step in the help

The help for schools explains in detail how to set up the survey, print the parent letters, open the analysis and create the report. It also answers common questions, for example when a letter gets lost. The help for schools is in German.

What you need

  • A computer with a printer
  • About 10 minutes for the setup
  • A safe place for the key sheet

Try it first

In the demo you play through a school route survey at the invented Sonnenwiese primary school in Musterstadt, from both sides. As a parent you draw a route to school and mark dangerous and good spots. As the school you open the analysis with the key sheet and see the answers of 60 sample families on the map, up to the finished report. So you know beforehand exactly what it means for the school and the parents. You get a personal access for 14 days on request by email. The demo is in German.

  • As a parent

Draw the route to school, mark dangerous and good spots, send it encrypted.

  • As the school

The analysis with the map, problem spots, means of transport and the reasons for driving children.

  • The report

Ready for the municipality and the traffic authority, as a web page, PDF and GIS data.
